Important Notice for First-Time Tournament Players
If you have never played in a chess tournament before, these guidelines will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Equipment & Preparation

Provided by Organisers: Chess boards, pieces, clocks, scoresheets, food and drink (at cost), spare pens

What to Bring: Pen(s) for notation, correct change for entry fees and food

Electronic Devices: Turn OFF completely or avoid bringing them entirely
Electronic Device Regulations

Automatic Forfeit: If your phone or device makes noise during the game

Restroom Policy: Do not take devices to the toilet or risk forfeiting the game

Device Storage: Arbiters may hold phones during games (safety not guaranteed)
Game Setup & Etiquette

Clock Orientation: Ensure white side of clock is up before starting

Sportsmanship: Always shake hands with opponents at start and end of game

Communication: Only speak to offer draws or drinks; avoid conversation during play

Food Policy: Avoid eating at the board, especially hot food
Game Rules & Procedures

Problem Resolution: Pause clock and call arbiter for any issues

Piece Adjustment: Say "I adjust" before touching pieces to reposition

Touch-Move Rule: If you touch a piece, you must move it (if legal)

Opponent's Pieces: If touched, you must capture if possible

Castling Protocol: Move king first to avoid rook-move enforcement

Draw Offers: Offer on your own time after making your move

Clock Operation: Use same hand for moves and clock; avoid hitting clock

Pawn Promotion: Find replacement piece before promoting and pressing clock

Illegal Moves: Result in immediate loss (includes moving to eighth rank or capturing king)
Time Controls & Notation

Rapid Tournaments (25-30 minutes): Notation optional but permitted

Standard Games with Increment: Notation required throughout
